The first grade students in my school are currently involved in studying the metamorphosis of caterpillars to butterflies. It has been interesting to note their observations as each student sees something different and then reflects on what they see in their own unique way. These reflections become an important basis for comprehension of the metamorphic process.
Metamorphosis in and of itself regards a sudden and very great change in appearance and structure. In education, change occurs at varying rates and degrees and though never easy, almost certainly necessary for growth. As a school counselor, your reflections are a critical component to both your own personal growth and that of your students. In fact, Dr. Judith Bookhammer refers to reflection as the fifth “R” in her summer PSCA Executive Director’s column.
What will you see this school year and how will you record your reflections? How have your current goals evolved from what you learned last year? In the link to this message you will find my poetic reference to the transformation I have experienced in my past 17 years as a school counselor. Although my past influences my present, it is the future that challenges me to be transformed to a more purposeful, accountable leader and advocate. I wish the same transformation for you!
